The Gilded Cage of Being a High Paid Carney

I been involved with motion picture work since 1987; both in front and behind the camera end of the business. Set dressing is what I've been doing since 1994. It's a stange job, it can be the best thing in the world sometimes, and it can be the worst. People think we don't do a damn thing, because we do our work in warehouses, after construction, after paint and before any of the shooting crew are there; no one really sees us do our job, no one knows who we are when we are there, we' kind of like black sheep of the crew. We're not there for the filming, so we're not on set eating the peeled grapes that so and so brought for the crew, we don' get the nice gifts that the crew get from the stars, because they don't think about anyone past the the individuals on the set, they usually forget that there is twice as many people not on set doing just as hard a job or more to get it ready for them; but hey, we still get paid damn well, and it has many many rewards at the end of the day. One thing is for sure, it sure is a different glimpse into the; hierarchy, pecking order, food chain, waste and excess of the film business than anybody else gets to see. As far as movies are concerned, I generally don't go see major motion pictures anymore, I have a hard time pulling myself away from my own projects. Plus, I prefer documentary movies over fiction, i have had too much escapism, and advertising bombardement in this lifetime already. Some people don't understand this since I am an actor too. For me, you don't study acting by studying other actors, you study life, people and real life characters.
